What are Driver Qualification Files?
Driver Qualification Files (DQFs) are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the DOT to ensure the safety and eligibility of commercial drivers. These files contain essential documents that verify a driver’s qualifications and suitability for operating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).
Who Needs to Maintain Driver Qualification Files?
Any business that employs drivers to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate or intrastate commerce is required to maintain DQFs. This includes vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, as well as those transporting hazardous materials requiring placards.
It’s crucial to update the DQFs at least once a year or whenever there’s a significant change, such as receiving a new license or medical certificate. Failure to maintain up-to-date files can lead to severe penalties, including fines and the risk of being placed out of service.
What Should be Included in the DQF?
A typical Driver Qualification File should include, but not be limited to:
